Madeleine

Sustained by memories, our consciousness resembles a subjective model of intertwined and interlaced patterns of perception. It is now widely recognized by researchers that memory is not a literal reproduction of the past, but instead a creative and constructive process. Characterized by a humble subject matter of domestic scenes, Madeleine is a series of photography that carefully captures common every-day experiences and brings the recognition of the past in a present moment. These images abstract the character of the object and transform the daily mundane into sensory surfaces. The familiar subject matter, subtle arrays of tonal gradations and color variations evoke some universal involuntary memories from a distant warm place in the viewer’s mind where tranquility, solitude, and equanimity reside. The oval shape of the composition was appropriated from classical Chinese painting, a motif that traces back to a long-standing tradition in the history of image-making, suggesting a sense of homage and visual complexity.
